The Comics Code Authority was established in 1954 with a singular purpose: to forestall the creation of government-mandated guidelines for comic book content, particularly for the main audience of children. This move was driven by governmental beliefs and the influence of Frederic Wertham’s book, “Seduction of the Innocent,” which prompted congressional hearings on the supposed moral corruption of youth by comic publishers.
Horror comics were especially scrutinized, presented as evidence of their harmful impact on young minds. To avert potential government shutdown of the industry as a whole, the Comics Magazine Association of America devised the Comics Code, setting standards to try to alleviate these concerns.
The question remains: which books sparked such controversy? Thanks to Authentic Editions, enthusiasts now have the opportunity to view some of these horror titles, the very ones that incited such fear among politicians that book burning became a sanctioned response. Coming soon to Kickstarter, Authentic Editions presents: The Pre-Code Horror Comic Facsimile Collection.
Pre-Code Horror: The Comics That Shocked a Nation
Banned for their graphic depictions of violence, psychological terror, and moral ambiguity, Pre-Code Horror comics were at the center of a moral panic in the early 1950s. These comics were blamed for corrupting the youth, prompting a series of televised U.S. Senate hearings and the eventual establishment of the Comics Code Authority in 1954, which censored content and nearly wiped out the horror genre overnight.
Now, more than seven decades later, Authentic Editions is resurrecting 15 of these lost treasures, providing collectors and fans with a meticulously restored collection that captures the fear, artistry, and controversy that once gripped the nation.
